Live webcams can be considered masters of the longue durée, the extended shot in filmmaking. They stream a constant flow of events occurring in front of their lenses, from a street corner in Tokyo or a coastline in Dorset. Can such streams become cinema — or something referential to it? Elin Aspfors uses data recorded on webcams, such as movement and colour, to trigger sounds. Through this process, the image becomes the score, and the soundscape is generated by the unpredictability of the moment. The balance between ambient and diegetic sounds, combined with the events on screen, invites viewers to lean into the environment and highlights the passing of time. Each webcam produces a unique soundscape that deepens perception of the image.Listen︎︎︎
