They stream a constant flow of events occurring in front of their lenses, from a street corner in Tokyo or a coastline in Dorset. Can such streams become cinema — or something referential to it? Elin Aspfors uses data recorded on webcams, such as movement and colour, to trigger sounds. Through this process, the image becomes the score, and the soundscape is generated by the unpredictability of the moment. The balance between ambient and diegetic sounds, combined with the events on screen, invites viewers to lean into the environment and highlights the passing of time. Based on satellite and aerial imagery, services like Google Maps offer a seemingly cloud-free, daylit view of the world. In reality, the atmosphere is a shifting sea of clouds, a vital part of our planet’s ecosystem. This new image is made possible by computed processes such as cloud masking. Cloud Archaeology reimagines satellite imagery creation to include time and cloud cover. Clouds are outlined and extracted by hand from Landsat 8 data, reconstructed as layered maps revealing the superposition of time. Throughout her studies, she developed a growing interest in technology — how it functions, how it is implemented, and how it shapes our ways of seeing and listening. Her work explores themes such as surveillance, computational photography, digital archaeology, and analog data storage. By examining the mechanisms behind Audio/Visual technologies, she reconfigures them into poetic experiences that invite reflection rather than consumption.
